Example: “Informatics is the study of information, while nursing is about caring for patients. Both are important fields that have evolved over time. In my experience as a nurse, I’ve seen how informatics has improved patient care by providing nurses with tools and resources they need to do their jobs more efficiently. For example, when I was working on a project at my previous job, I used data analytics software to identify trends among patients who were admitted to the hospital’s emergency room.”
Employers ask this question to learn more about your qualifications and why you are the best person for the job. Before your interview, make a list of all the skills and experiences that make you an ideal candidate. Focus on highlighting your most relevant skills and how they can benefit the organization.

Electronic health records are a common tool for informatics nurses. They allow the nurse to access patient information quickly and easily, which is important when working with large numbers of patients. Your answer should show that you have experience using electronic health records and can explain how they benefit your work as an informatics nurse.

In one instance, a doctor told me that a patient’s symptoms didn’t match up with their diagnosis. After looking at the data again, I found that the patient had experienced some symptoms in the past but hadn’t reported them.”
Example: “I have some experience working with medical software, but I’m more experienced with business software. In my last role as an informatics nurse, I helped develop a new system for tracking patient information that was both efficient and easy to use. The system we developed allowed us to track patients’ vital signs, medications and test results all in one place.”
The day-to-day role of a health informatic professional will most likely include several meetings with clinicians when looking to understand their reporting requests and therefore, you might need to be able to understand the clinical terms that are used and have an understanding of the clinical terminology in your organization. Next, you will probably have access to large-scale clinical databases where information is housed from the EHR, labs and other sources of medical data. You might have to use SQL to extract insights from these databases (e.g. the number of patients that were readmitted over a 30 day period). Once you have extracted the data insights which match the reporting needs of the clinicians, you have to communicate your results often in the form of graphs and charts.
