It is very exciting for me to have the chance to spend my summers 2020 at Mercari Japan. When I applied to be a Backend Engineer at Mercari Japan and when I got the offer letter, it was like being on a roller coaster.
I’m going to talk about my interviews in some detail to give everyone a general idea of how professional and fun it is for Mercari to choose potential employees.

How Did I Apply?
I applied at Mercari for the position of Backend Engineering Intern during the first week of August. Along with most of the basic details, I filled referrer as a senior of my institute. This was a plus because, as I learned later, the recruiters personally ask the referrer for feedback on the candidate. Also, the referrer becomes your direct contact point with the HR.
As a note, I asked many of my seniors who work at the company for feedback on me during the hiring process. I’ve worked with most of them before.
What Response I Received?
The Mercari HR team got back to me about a week after I sent them my application and asked me to get a “No Objection Certificate” from my university.
After getting the certificate and sending it, I was given an online technical screen test that I had to finish within a week of getting it. It was a timed round based on Data Structures and Algorithms, and you had 120 minutes to solve 5 problems. The choice of programming language was left to me.
One of the problems was that I had to write it as well as I would write something for production. This meant using good naming conventions, writing documentation, functional programming, and other things. The questions, absolutely in terms of DS / Algo, were pretty easy for me as well.
To make things more clear, I’m not a competitive coder with a lot of experience, and I don’t do CP very often. Still, I read the whole “Cracking the Code Interview” book twice: first, before the screening test, and then again, before the second interview round. It is an amazing book and is great for gaining knowledge of algorithms and basic technical interview etiquettes.
