How to Pay Your Water Bill in Carbondale, IL

Paying your water bill is an important responsibility for all residents and businesses in Carbondale. The city offers a few convenient options to pay your water and sewer bill so you can avoid service interruptions. In this article, I’ll walk through the different ways you can pay your Carbondale water bill

Online Bill Pay

The easiest way to pay your water bill in Carbondale is online through the city’s website. The online bill pay system allows you to securely pay your bill 24/7 without having to mail anything or visit city offices.

To pay your water bill online go to the Online Bill Pay page on ExploreCarbondale.com. You’ll need to have your water account number handy to log in and view your balance. The online system accepts Visa Mastercard, Discover, American Express, and e-checks with no additional fees.

Payments made online are typically posted to your account within 1-2 business days. I recommend paying online if possible because it’s the fastest and most convenient option.

Pay By Phone

If you prefer to pay over the phone, you can call the City of Carbondale Revenue Office at 618-457-3265 and speak with a representative. They can take your payment over the phone using a credit/debit card or electronic check.

Phone payments are available Monday through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm. This is a bit more limited than the online option since you can only call during business hours. But it’s still a quick way to pay without having to mail in a check or visit in-person.

Pay By Mail

To pay your water bill by mail, you’ll need to send your payment to:

Make your check or money order payable to the City of Carbondale. Include your water account number on the memo line.

Mailed payments can take 7-10 days to process, so make sure to mail your payment 1-2 weeks before the due date to avoid late fees. I don’t recommend mailing cash – it’s best to send a check or money order for security.

Pay In-Person

You can also pay your water bill in-person at the Carbondale Civic Center located at 200 S Illinois Ave. The Revenue Office on the 2nd floor accepts cash, checks, credit/debit payments from 8am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday.

Paying in-person requires you to visit during business hours, so it’s a bit less convenient than the online or phone options. But it can be helpful if you prefer to pay with cash or need same-day payment processing.

Reconnect Fees for Past Due Accounts

If your water service has been interrupted due to a past due balance, you will need to pay a reconnect fee in addition to bringing your account current. The reconnect fee can be paid using any of the options above – online, phone, mail or in-person.

Just be sure to designate that the payment is for a reconnect fee so it’s applied properly to restore your service. Past due balances must be paid before your water service can resume.

Paying Someone Else’s Water Bill

You can use the online bill pay system to pay the water bill of another Carbondale resident, such as an elderly parent, college student, or other dependent. From the Online Bill Pay page, click on “Pay a Water Bill for Someone Else” and enter the account holder’s information. This is useful if you need to pay the bill for someone who can’t do it themselves.

Avoid Paying Past Due Balances Online

One important note – if your account is past due, do not pay online. The city requests that you call 618-457-3265 to make a past due payment to avoid service interruption. Paying past due balances online can inadvertently cause your water to be shut off.
