If you own property in Miami-Dade County, you likely receive a monthly bill from the Stormwater Utility. This covers the cost of managing flooding and pollution from stormwater runoff. Paying your Stormwater Utility bill is easy to do online, by phone, or by mail.
What is the Stormwater Utility Fee?
The Stormwater Utility is a department within Miami-Dade County government. It was created in 1991 to address issues with:
- Stormwater pollution from contaminants being washed into the drainage system
- Flooding in areas without adequate drainage capabilities
To fund projects that help solve these problems, the Utility charges property owners a monthly fee. This bill is separate from your property taxes.
The fee amount is based on how much impervious surface area your property has Impervious surfaces (like rooftops and concrete) prevent rainwater absorption into the ground
More impervious area leads to more runoff that the Utility must manage So properties with more impervious surface area pay higher fees
Who Gets a Monthly Stormwater Utility Bill?
If you own developed property in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, you will receive a monthly Stormwater Utility bill. The fee applies to:
- Residential properties like homes, condos, mobile homes
- Non-residential properties like businesses, industrial facilities, churches, schools
Incorporated cities may also have residents pay the Utility fee. Check with your municipality to confirm if the fee applies to properties within city boundaries.
How is the Fee Calculated?
For residential properties:
- The fee is based on equivalent residential units (ERUs).
- 1 ERU = 1,548 square feet of impervious surface area
- Each ERU costs $6 per month
- A typical single-family home is 1 ERU
For non-residential properties:
- The total impervious square footage is measured
- The footage is divided by 1,548 (the ERU size)
- That number is multiplied by $6/month to get the fee
So the more impervious surface on your property, the higher your Utility bill will be.
