Battery Engineer Interview
I applied online. I interviewed at Tesla
Interview
I had applied online for the Battery Engineer position. After a week, I received a call for HR interview. She went through my resume and asked me questions based on that and also asked about my interests. After a couple of days, she mailed saying that there is no position in this team and if I would interested in few other teams. I said yes but did not hear back from her later.
- Tell me about yourself
Battery Engineer Interview
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Tesla (Needham, MA) in Jan 2014
Interview
Tesla did not handle my interview process well. I started talking to the general HR person there and she missed the call time twice. First time, she wrote me 25 minutes after the call was supposed to happen telling me she’d have to reschedule and the second, she actually took the call 15 minutes late. Then I interviewed with the battery team lead engineer and that was fine. Lastly I was supposed to talk with the hiring manager for that team, but never got the chance. Instead, I received an email from someone I had never talked to before, telling me the job had been filled. I’d say it was just a little rude all around (Except for the engineer, he was fine).
- It was back in 2017, so most of the questions are long gone from my memory. I do remember them not being overly challenging, as I could answer them all as a Freshman in College.
Some of the important factors that determine the duration of the discharged battery to charge are:
Positive terminal is identified painted with red color and negative terminal is identified painted with blue color on the top of the battery.
If a battery cannot able to hold proper charge or if the battery capacity is falls below 80% of its rated capacity then it is considered as the end of life of the battery. Many factors affect the life of the battery
During charging of the battery acid is produced at the plate surface and during discharging of the battery acid will be consumed, due to this nonuniform concentration heavy parts of the electrolyte settles at the bottom and lighter parts of the electrolyte floats on the top. This phenomenon is call stratification. Stratification affects the life of the battery.
Temperature is one of the major factors that have impact on battery performance, shelf life, charging and battery voltage control. At higher temperature batteries will have more chemical activity compared to batteries which operate at the designed temperature.
The interviewer is asking this question to find out what your true passion is. Ideally it aligns to the type of work youre interviewing for. If not, tie it back in terms of how it relates to the job, for example, “I believe Ill learn the necessary skills in this job to pursue my passion later on in life.”
Describe the positive aspects of your work style if possible, including: work ethic, attention to detail, interpersonal skills, skill sets (analytical or otherwise), leadership abilities, communication skills.
If you answer either, just make sure you explain why. For example, “I would consider myself to be more analytical because Im good at examining a data set and then understanding how to interpret it in a business environment.” or “Im more of interpersonal person because I enjoy working and collaborating with my teammates and clients”
Usually, you probably havent told your boss for obvious reasons. So its ok to say that they do not. You dont want to upset the balance at your current job after all and nothing is guaranteed in an interview. The interviewer should understand this stance.
We all have difficult decisions in our lives. Show how you were able to arrive at it and then how you decisively acted.
