“I want to be a Correctional Officer for three reasons. The first reason, and perhaps the most important one is that I am at a stage in my life where I want a new challenge that allows me to utilize the skills and qualities I have built up over the years. I have excellent judgment and leadership skills, I am a very strong team player, I am comfortable making difficult decisions and I can be trusted to follow rules and procedures correctly. Finally, I genuinely want to work in a rehabilitative environment where I can influence people to lead better lives and make better choices. Having studied the job description of a Correctional Officer carefully, I believe I will be a good addition to your already-established team.”

“The role is extremely varied, and you have to carry out all of your responsibilities with diligence and professionalism whilst following strict rules and procedures. Included within the role is a requirement to monitor and supervise inmates, maintain order, escort inmates around the prison to job sites or for medical assessments for example, and regularly check inmate numbers for accuracy. You must also respond to difficult situations quickly and calmly whilst following procedures; de-escalate confrontational situations; look after your Correctional Officer partners; keep and maintain accurate records; conduct regular inspections to find contraband or unauthorized goods and also aid in the rehabilitation and counseling of offenders.”

Probation and Parole Agent Interview

Application

I applied online. I interviewed at State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections in Mar 2022

Interview

Process can be slow at times. Typically three-four questions. Education/Experience, Diversity, and situational questions (think STAR method). There are usually three people on the first panel and may not always be the supervisors who have the ope positions. If you “exceed” in your answers you may not have to do a second interview. If you “meet” the expectations you may have a second interview. The second interview is more situational and usually done with three supervisors who are hiringh.

Interview Questions

  • As a Probation and Parole Agent, you will work with individuals from various backgrounds. Tell us about a time you worked with someone different from you.

Communications Operator Interview

Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections (Glendale, WI) in Oct 2017

Interview

The interview went well, with 3 of their Senior people who seemed to genuinely care. The Senior assistant that they have working the hiring process really does not seem to want to do her job and will harass you with endless e-mails, wherein she does not seem to really care about the actual facts or process. Very strange.

Correctional Officer Interview

Application

I applied online. The process took 8 weeks. I interviewed at State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections (Wisconsin Rapids, WI) in Nov 2017

Interview

The hiring process was simple but drawn out way too long in my opinion. It took 3 weeks to get an email for an interview and another 2 weeks to get the interview. Then we had to wait another 2 weeks or so to go through the health screening. The health screening was almost ridiculous. They have everyone go to one place(Oshkosh) which happens to be a 2.5 hour drive away from where I live. It took me 4 hours to get through it(which is how long they will tell you it is but I never expected it to actually take that long), most of it sitting and waiting, on top of the 5 hours of driving. Be prepared for the woman that does the screening on the treadmill to tell you how unhealthy you are. I served 4 years in the military and didn’t have to go through that type of screening to enlist. The treadmill starts as walking at a normal speed on a flat surface but the screener adds incline and speed about every 2 minutes or so until you get to the point of a 15% incline and 4.5mph speed. 4.5 mph is a very slow jogging speed but you can’t really jog because you’re at an incline of 15% on a treadmill, so you’re forced to walk which just makes it more painful. You have to do this all while maintaining what they deem an acceptable heart rate. They tell you if your heart rate goes over what is “healthy” for you, you will fail the screening and not get hired. I definitely don’t run like I used to in the service but I know that if I was told to run miles again, I could do it. Forcing someone to walk at a 15% incline at a speed of 4.5mph while maintaining a “healthy” heart rate is impossible for anyone that doesn’t run up hills every day. I highly doubt that a single person “passed” by their standard. I also find that part of the screening to be pointless because I don’t foresee walking at a 15% incline at 4.5mph as part of the job. After the screening, you’ll receive an email if you are getting hired 1-2 weeks later.

Interview Questions

  • I don’t recall all of the questions they ask but if you have any life experience at all you will be able to answer them with no issue. 1. This job requires that you have great attention to detail. Explain a time where you’ve had to have attention to detail.2. This job entails working with people of all different types. Explain a situation where you’ve worked with people that are different from you.3. I believe there was a question about giving an example of having to prioritize your work.

Tell Us About Yourself
