Landing your dream job as an eyelash technician requires more than just technical skills and a steady hand. It also demands the ability to articulate your expertise, demonstrate your passion for the field and showcase your customer-centric approach. This comprehensive guide delves deep into the most frequently asked eyelash technician interview questions providing insightful answers and valuable tips to help you stand out from the crowd.

1 Can you describe your experience with different types of eyelash extensions such as mink, silk, or synthetic?

In this question, the interviewer is gauging your knowledge and expertise in various types of eyelash extensions. Each type offers unique advantages and drawbacks and understanding these nuances is essential for providing informed recommendations and achieving the desired results for each client.

Example Answer:

“I possess extensive experience with all three types of eyelash extensions, each catering to specific client needs and preferences. Mink lashes, renowned for their natural look and feel, require meticulous care due to their delicate nature I often recommend them for clients prioritizing a natural enhancement Silk lashes, on the other hand, strike a balance between natural and dramatic, offering a lighter feel than synthetic lashes while delivering volume. They are popular among clients seeking volume without excessive weight. Lastly, synthetic lashes provide the most dramatic effect due to their thickness and gloss. While ideal for clients desiring a bold look, their weight necessitates ensuring the client’s natural lashes can support them before application. Understanding these distinctions allows me to effectively advise clients based on their individual requirements and aesthetic goals.”

2. How do you ensure a client’s natural lashes are not damaged during the extension process?

This question probes your understanding of the importance of maintaining the health and integrity of a client’s natural lashes. It also assesses your technical knowledge and professional approach to safeguarding client well-being.

Example Answer:

“Preserving the health of my client’s natural lashes is paramount in my role as an eyelash technician. Before commencing any procedure, I conduct a thorough consultation to understand their lash health and expectations. This allows me to select the appropriate type of extensions and adhesive based on this information. Overburdening natural lashes with heavy extensions can lead to damage, so I prioritize using the right weight for each individual. During application, I meticulously isolate each natural lash before applying an extension to prevent clumping or pulling. Additionally, I provide comprehensive aftercare advice to maintain the health of their natural lashes post-treatment. Regular touch-ups are encouraged instead of waiting for all extensions to fall out, which could stress the natural lashes.”

3. What steps do you take to maintain hygiene and cleanliness during the procedure?

Sanitation is very important for all beauty procedures, but especially for ones that touch the eyes. This question shows how important it is to know and follow the right hygiene rules to keep clients safe and comfortable.

Example Answer:

“As an eyelash technician, one of the most important things I do is keep my work spotless and clean.” Before starting any procedure, I always wash my hands, wear a mask to stop the spread of germs, and wear gloves when I need to. All tools are sterilized before and after each client using professional-grade disinfectants. Single-use items like cotton swabs or micro-brushes are disposed of immediately after use. Between clients, the work area is carefully cleaned to make sure that no glue or lash debris is left behind. This same level of care is shown to the treatment bed, which gets new sheets for each new client. For personal hygiene reasons, I make sure my hair is pulled back and don’t wear jewelry or clothes that are too loose that could get on my desk. Regular training on hygiene standards keeps me updated with best practices. “.

4. Can you explain the process of a lash lift and tint, and how it differs from lash extensions?

This question assesses your knowledge of different lash enhancement techniques and your ability to explain them clearly to clients. Understanding the distinctions between lash lifts and extensions is crucial for recommending the most suitable option based on individual client preferences.

Example Answer:

“A lash lift and tint is a semi-permanent procedure that makes natural eyelashes look better by giving the impression of perfectly curled lashes with more definition.” It is an excellent option for clients seeking a low-maintenance solution. The lashes are permed to give them a semi-permanent curl, and then a tint is put on to give them more depth of color. The result is fuller-looking, darker lashes without the need for mascara. Lashes extensions, on the other hand, involve attaching fake, silk, or mink lashes to a client’s natural lashes to make them fuller and longer. They give you a more dramatic look, but they need to be taken care of regularly because they fall out with your natural lash cycle. Getting your eyelashes lifted and tinted and getting extensions are both good for you, but extensions give you a dramatic look and need regular care. “.

5. Describe what it was like to deal with a client who was allergic to the lash glue.

This question explores your problem-solving skills and ability to handle unexpected situations, particularly those involving client discomfort or adverse reactions. It also sheds light on your knowledge of alternative products and procedures for clients with sensitivities or allergies.

Example Answer:

“During my career, I encountered a client who developed an allergic reaction to the lash glue. Recognizing her symptoms immediately – redness, swelling, and itching – I promptly removed the extensions using a professional-grade remover. I then applied a soothing eye gel to calm the area and advised her to consult a doctor for further treatment. Post this incident, I implemented a mandatory patch test 24 hours before any new application to prevent such incidents. This has not only helped in identifying potential allergies but has also increased trust among clients.”

6. How do you determine the appropriate length and thickness of extensions for each client?

This question delves into your understanding of the needs and preferences of different clients, as well as your ability to make professional judgments based on the client’s natural lashes. It is essential for eyelash technicians to take into account not only the client’s aesthetic desires, but also the health and condition of their natural lashes, to avoid potential damage or discomfort.

Example Answer:

“Determining the appropriate length and thickness of extensions for each client is a crucial part of being an eyelash technician. It involves a thorough consultation process where I assess the client’s natural lashes, lifestyle, and personal style preferences. The health and strength of the client’s natural lashes play a significant role in choosing the extension size. If their lashes are thin or weak, heavy or long extensions could cause damage. Understanding the client’s lifestyle also helps. For instance, clients who lead active lifestyles may prefer shorter, lighter extensions that won’t interfere with their activities. Lastly, it’s important to consider the look the client wants to achieve. Some might want a dramatic effect while others prefer something more natural. Balancing these factors allows me to choose the best lash extensions for each individual client.”

7. Can you discuss your knowledge of the latest trends in eyelash extensions and how you stay updated?

The beauty industry is constantly evolving, with new trends, products, and techniques emerging all the time. As an eyelash technician, you’re not just expected to perform the service—you’re also expected to be a source of knowledge and advice for your clients. This question helps hiring managers understand how invested you are in your craft and if you’re proactive about staying on top of industry changes. It also gives them an idea of whether you can provide clients with the most up-to-date services and recommendations.

Example Answer:

“I keep myself updated on the latest trends in eyelash extensions through industry-specific publications, online forums, and social media platforms. Currently, hybrid lashes are popular as they offer a balanced blend of classic and volume lashes. Mega volume lashes are also trending for those seeking a more dramatic look. To stay current, I regularly attend workshops and trade shows. This not only helps me learn about new techniques but also about innovative products entering the market. I believe continuous learning is key in this ever-evolving field.”

8. How do you handle clients with particularly sensitive eyes or skin?

Being an eyelash technician isn’t just about applying lashes—it’s also about ensuring the well-being and comfort of your clients. Some clients may have sensitive skin or eyes that could react negatively to certain products or procedures. In asking this question, employers are looking for evidence that you’re aware of these issues and have strategies in place to handle such situations effectively and professionally.

Example Answer:

“When dealing with clients who have sensitive skin or eyes, it’s crucial to conduct a thorough consultation before proceeding. This allows me to understand their specific sensitivities and adapt my approach accordingly. I would use hypoallergenic products specifically designed for sensitive skin types to minimize any potential irritation. Patch tests are also an essential part of the process in order to ensure that there is no adverse reaction to the products. During application, I would take extra care to avoid direct contact with the client’s eyes and skin as much as possible. After the procedure, I’d provide them with detailed aftercare instructions tailored to their sensitivity, ensuring they know how to properly care for their lashes without causing discomfort or harm.”

9. How would you go about educating a client on aftercare for their eyelash extensions?

As an eyelash technician, your expertise doesn’t stop at application. It’s equally important that you’re able to educate clients on how to care for their extensions post-appointment, ensuring longevity and health. This question allows interviewers to gauge your understanding of aftercare and your ability to communicate it effectively to clients.

Example Answer:

“Educating a client on aftercare for their eyelash extensions involves clear and simple instructions. I would explain that they should avoid getting the extensions wet for 24 hours post-application to allow the adhesive to fully bond. It’s crucial to avoid oil-based products near

Who Is Verlee Gumban?

Verlee is the owner of Lash Maven. She used to work in the food industry but now she loves beauty and is a lash artist.

Question 1: What’s your story?

Answer: It was in 2010 that Verlee dived into the beauty industry from the food industry. It’s interesting that she didn’t care much about doing eyelashes after she graduated from beauty school; she only did them for her clients who asked her to make sure they didn’t leave without anything.

When she learned how to do lashes and saw how they looked, she gave up on her first idea and went all in on lashes. In all honesty, Verlee had no choice but to go into the beauty business because she wanted to build a business where she could set her own hours. It even did her good because of the ‘keen eye’ she developed from the beauty industry. Being a QA, lash treatments and the attention to detail it demanded was the right fit for her.

Verlee also reached out to the business coach Aaron Keith from Ascension Programs right when she began. Using the coaching services, she was fully booked within 4 months of starting her own business. Verlee has a long list of clients that he got through word of mouth and trust alone.

Question 2: What are the top challenges you faced when coming into the beauty industry?

Answer: There were many challenges for this lash tech. Her first biggest hurdle was working on her own after being acquainted with teamwork. Verlee says she missed having a manager she could ask for direction or a supervisor to keep an eye on her and let her know about any problems or concerns she had.

As soon as possible, Verlee realized that as a lash tech who ran her own business, it was her responsibility to be a manager, a supervisor, and everything in between. She then says that she didn’t know she had to be her own cheerleader, banker, IT helper, marketer, and sales executive. Though all she wanted to do was make other women feel pretty by putting on eyelashes, she now had a lot of other things she had to do.

One of the most important things that has kept her going is her own network of people who cheer her on and make sure she never feels down. Above all, she loves the exciting opportunity where every new day opens with a learning experience.

Another huge challenge that Verlee came by was saying no. She wanted to have all the time in the world, but she had to work hard to learn how to say “no” at the right time. Even though she didn’t want to let anyone down with family, hobbies, and other things, saying no to everything helped her reach her goals and dreams more than saying yes to everything.

Question 3: What makes you and your business different from other techs?

Answer: Currently the owner of Lash Maven Boutique, Verlee does excellent Russian Volume lashes. As she doesn’t do anything other than lash treatments, she’s an expert in the lash world. Verlee decides whether to do a lash treatment based on the client’s brow shape, eye shape, and even what they do for a living. She’s all about custom eyelashes.

Her specialty? Russian Volume. The first “LashBloom” conference in North America was held in Chicago in 2013, she says. That’s when the trend hit the market. The same is where she got trained by some of the world’s best lash artists. She also mastered volume lashes during the same time. One thing that makes her stand out is making false eyelashes look natural on clients, like they don’t have any on.

Verlee enjoys hearing from her clients, who predominantly say that their friends and family have told them that their fakes always look real. She also has a heated spa bed that is known to help her clients relax and give them the best session ever.

Question 4: What’s your next milestone?

Answer: Verlee wants to open more salons now that she has a new one on 101 Coast Highway, where she works with Dawn Nicholas of Remedy Beauty and Relaxation Lounge in Encinitas. She’s working on things like progressive skin care treatments, body treatments, waxing services, falsies, massages, and reflexology techniques.
