The origins of Fremont trace back to the Mission San José founded by Spanish missionaries in 1797 The area then became home to several small independent towns like Centerville, Niles, Irvington, and Warm Springs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries In 1956, these towns merged to form the incorporated city of Fremont, named after explorer John C. Frémont.

Fremont was known for farming and industry for most of the 20th century. Farms producing grapes nursery plants and olives dominated the landscape. A lot of money was made at the Vallejo Flour Mill and the Palmdale Winery. The automaker GM operated an assembly plant there.
