Program Associate Interview
I applied online. I interviewed at People Assisting The Homeless (Los Angeles, CA)
Interview
I applied online. About a month later I received a phone call to schedule an interview. I interviewed in person downtown. It was two representatives. They didn’t seem to know what they were doing, by which I mean they didn’t seem like they had a lot of experience doing job interviews. They asked a lot of vague questions and I wasn’t sure what they expected from me. They were finished after about ten minutes. I feel like they didn’t get to know me that well at all. At the end I asked what the hiring process was like and they didn’t know what I meant. I followed up with an email a week later. No one responded. Then several weeks later I received a reply stating they had moved forward with another candidate. I guess I was hoping that they would be a little more mature since their job is so important.
- What do you do to stay organized?
Highlight Intake and Orientation Experience
When new clients approach the shelter for housing, the staff interacts with them and helps them get settled. Part of this process involves determining whether someone is eligible to stay at the shelter. Some shelters have income limits, while others are open only to women or men. Specific procedures for verifying eligibility vary from shelter to shelter, but might require having clients fill out paperwork. When a client is accepted, an orientation is conducted for new residents of the shelter. An interviewer might ask you how you would go about checking someones eligibility, and what you would do if someone is not eligible to stay at the shelter. In addition, you might be asked how you will explain procedures to new residents so they understand what is expected of them.

Tell me about your ability to work under pressure?
Answer tips:
Here’s where the ability to perform under fire comes into play. And, if possible, give an example that is relatable to the type of position that you are applying for.
The ideal way to respond to this question is to provide examples and situations of how you have handled stress in your previous jobs. In this way, the interviewer can establish a clear picture of how well you are likely to react when the going gets tough.
Pro tip: make sure you are not referencing a time when your lack of organization or communication put you in a “self induced” stressful scenario. This is to say, don’t share a story about how your procrastiation created a situation where you had to finish a project quickly.
