Register for an Online Account

The fastest way to pay your San Francisco water bill is through the SFPUC’s online payment system. Start by registering for a free online account at myaccount-water.sfpuc.org. This allows you to view your water usage, current charges and make secure online payments.

Registration only takes a few minutes. You’ll need your 12-digit account number from your printed water bill. Choose a username, password and security questions. Verify your identity by providing your account holder name, service address and email.

Once registered, you can log in anytime to check your balance and make quick online payments. It’s much faster than waiting on hold to pay by phone.

One-Time Online Payments

If you don’t want the hassle of registering an online account, the SFPUC offers easy one-time payments through their EZ Pay website. Just enter your account number and exact balance due. You can pay by credit card, debit card or eCheck. There’s a $1,000 limit per 30 days on credit/debit payments.

EZ Pay also provides the option to pay with cash at any 7-Eleven store. Simply download the payment barcode and bring it to the register. Most 7-Elevens are open 24 hours for your convenience.

Recurring Auto Pay

For ultimate convenience, sign up for auto pay through your online SFPUC account. This automatically deducts your water bill from your chosen bank account each month. You’ll never miss a payment or incur late fees again.

To enroll, log in to your account and select Auto Pay under Payment Options. Enter your bank routing and account numbers to link it to your water account. Choose a payment date between the 1st and 28th of the month. Sit back and relax as your bill gets paid automatically each billing cycle.

Pay by Phone

If you prefer to pay your SF water bill over the phone, call (415) 551-3000 and select option 1 for “Bill Payment”. Provide your 12-digit account number and follow the prompts to make a payment.

You can pay using Visa, Mastercard, American Express or an electronic check. Have your credit card ready. For eChecks, you’ll need your bank routing and account number.

To save time entering payment details each month, set up a recurring phone payment plan. Just complete an authorization form available on the SFPUC website.

Pay by Mail

To pay your water bill by mail, simply detach the payment stub from your printed bill and enclose it with a check or money order. Make payments out to “San Francisco Water” and mail to:

San Francisco Water
P.O. Box 7369
San Francisco, CA 94120-7369

Write your account number on the check or money order and allow 7-10 days for delivery and processing. Do not mail cash payments.

Pay In Person

If you prefer paying your water bill in person, you have several options:

  • At the SFPUC building at 525 Golden Gate Ave, Monday-Friday 10am-2pm. A drop box is also available for check/money order payments.

  • At any 7-Eleven store with a payment barcode from EZ Pay. Cash only, $10 minimum.

  • At San Francisco City Hall, Room 140 from 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday. Cash or checks accepted.

  • At SFPUC’s Customer Service office on the 1st floor of 525 Golden Gate Ave from 8am-5pm on weekdays. Pay by cash, check, credit/debit cards.

Avoid mailing cash payments or leaving cash in the SFPUC drop box. Pay those bills in person for security.

Avoid Late Fees

San Francisco water bills are due 15 days after the billing date. Any unpaid balances past the due date get a late fee penalty.

Avoid late fees by paying on time through auto pay or scheduling payments as soon as you receive your bill. If paying by mail, allow 1 week for delivery to ensure it arrives by the due date.

Set up third party notifications as a backup to get a reminder if your bill is unpaid. Sign up on the SFPUC website so a friend or agency can alert you to make a payment.

Review your available payment options and select the most convenient method for your lifestyle. Whether you prefer automatic payments, a quick online transaction or stopping by in person, paying your SF water bill can easily fit into your routine.

  • Discontinuation of Residential Water Service for Nonpayment On September 28, 2018, the California Legislature enacted Senate Bill 998 (Stat. 2018, Ch. 891), which amended the California Health and Safety Code to include a new chapter, California Health and Safety Code Section 116990 et seq., known as the “California Water Shutoff Protection Act” (the Act). The Act requires water systems like the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) to adopt, no later than February 1, 2020, a written policy on discontinuation of residential water service for nonpayment that includes a plan for deferred or reduced payments, alternative payment schedules, a formal mechanism for a customer to contest or appeal a bill, and a telephone number for a customer to call to discuss options to avoid discontinuation of residential service for nonpayment. Accordingly, SFPUC adopted a Policy on Discontinuation of Residential Water Service for Nonpayment to comply with the Act. • Third Party Notification Form Some of our senior citizen or dependent adult customers have told us that they occasionally lose track of their water bill. We understand, and have a special program to assist. The Third Party Notification Plan can help you avoid possible termination of service for non-payment. Under this plan, you choose a person or organization as your designated “third party.” This can be a friend, relative, minister, social agency or civic organization who can help you keep track of water service payments. The designated person is not responsible for paying the bill, but they can help make arrangements for payment. Download the Third Party Notification Form and mail it to: San Francisco Water Department 525 Golden Gate Avenue, 2nd Floor San Francisco, CA 94102
