I don’t want to imply that resourcefulness has been swept under the rug – many job descriptions indicate an interest in resourcefulness by saying “we need a self starter.” I’m never sure if that means “take that hill” or “describe the terrain and the best way in.” I lean in to the latter. While “self starting” might be the operative trait you need right now (or in a fast-paced startup environment where you don’t have any seasoned managers), resourcefulness will help you and your employees survive over the long run. For employers sitting in homogeneous industries like high tech, hiring on resourcefulness might also bring much needed diversity to your team.
People ask me all the time what traits I look for in a hire.
