Ive never came across a SBC and Im hoping to get some advice on understanding them and where to put them in the network.
We are currently using Asterisk as our PBX system and hoping to use a SIP trunk service by our MPLS provider. This SIP gateway will be within our MPLS VPN so it will contain a private IP address we can route to. Weve been informed we must use a SBC to connect to the SIP gateway.
This is the first Ive heard of a SBC. Cant Asterisk do the same functions as a SBC with registering and managing the calls? And where would you implement this sort of equipment in a collapsed core network that has two HA firewalls facing the outside of our network towards the PE router?

A Session Border Controller (SBC) is a network element that provides security and connectivity services for VoIP networks. It sits at the edge of the network and controls the signaling and media streams for each call. SBCs can provide a number of features such as NAT traversal, call admission control, media gateway control, and echo cancellation.
If multiple people try to access the same phone number at the same time, the Session Border Controller (SBC) will route the calls to the appropriate places. For example, if two people are trying to call the same person, the SBC will route one call to voicemail and the other call through to the person.
SBCs and firewalls are both types of security devices that are used to protect networks. However, they differ in terms of functionality. SBCs are designed specifically for VoIP traffic and provide features such as call routing, NAT traversal, and media gateway control. Firewalls, on the other hand, are more general purpose and can be used for a variety of different types of traffic.
Session Border Controllers (SBCs) are devices that manage VoIP calls and traffic. They are an important part of any VoIP network and are used to ensure quality of service (QoS) for VoIP calls. When interviewing for a position that involves working with SBCs, it is important to be prepared to answer questions about your experience and knowledge. In this article, we review some of the most common SBC interview questions and provide tips on how to answer them.
SBCs are used to provide a number of security and performance benefits for VoIP networks. By inspecting and filtering all traffic passing through the SBC, it can help to prevent denial of service attacks and other types of malicious activity. SBCs can also help to improve call quality by managing traffic congestion and providing other quality of service features.

FAQ
How does a session border controller work?
Session border controllers are designed to control communication that navigates through service provider networks, as well as handling all the signalling and media functions required to make SIP work seamlessly. SBCs enforce the Quality of Service (QoS) for conversations, as well as maintaining security.
Do you know what a session border controller is?
A session border controller (SBC) is a dedicated hardware device or software application that governs the manner in which phone calls are initiated, conducted and terminated on a voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network. Phone calls are referred to as sessions.
Why do I need a session border controller?
SBCs mitigate threats and protect the network from DoS attacks. DoS attacks are sometimes accompanied by malware, thus when an SBC mitigates a DoS attack it also ensures critical protection from dangerous malware. Once an SBC spots a potential threat, it can quickly block the problem.
What is a session border controller SIP?
A session border controller (SBC) is a network element deployed to protect SIP based voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) networks. Early deployments of SBCs were focused on the borders between two service provider networks in a peering environment.
