Human Service Specialist III Interview
I applied online. I interviewed at Oregon Department of Human Services (Salem, OR) in Jul 2020
Interview
During Covid, the process may have differed somewhat from the normal interview process. I applied via Workday and then was given an opportunity to answer a few questions to move on to the next interview step. After that, I had a Skype Business call with a handful of managers. Overall, it was easier than I expected, but it did take nearly two months to be hired from the time I applied. Again, I think Covid had a hand in the change from normal interview and hiring practices.

Policy Analyst Interview
I applied online. I interviewed at State of Oregon
Interview
First interview involved recording a series of 3 minute videos of myself answering questions. Kind of bizarre to not have an actual interviewer on the other end. The questions were pretty complex for just a 3 minute answer.
- What is your understanding of DEI?
Research Analyst III Interview
I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at State of Oregon in Apr 2022
Interview
I applied on the company website. A month later a HR reached out to me first saying that she was overwhelmed with applications and she would definitely review my materials. Two weeks later the hiring manager emailed a data exercise to be completed within 3 days. In the email the hiring manager said if an applicant is moving forward he/she will be contacted in a week, but I never hear back from the hiring manager again.
- I did not get an interview. The data exercise was using the given excel file with 3 spreadsheets to answer 6 questions. The excel file was about different racial groups (~130) and the numbers/percentages of the languages spoken/written; interpreter needs; etc.And use whatever visualization program to create plots using the data in the excel file.
How competitive will you be for the job?
Before you start filling out the application materials, it will be helpful to see how competitive you will be for this job. It might not be worth the several hours it may take you to complete the application materials if you do not have a specific type of experience requested in the announcement. Find out how competitive you will be with a quick review of three parts of the announcement.
If you meet the minimum qualifications, that’s great. If you can answer yes to most or all of the requested skills, that’s great. If you know how you will answer the supplemental questions, that’s great. However, if you do not have all the requested skills and don’t know how you will answer the supplemental questions, you probably will not be competitive for this particular job and will need to decide if you want to spend the time applying for it.
Now that you know you will be competitive, it’s time to start working on the application materials.
You know the duties from the announcement. List the duties, make up a question, and think of a specific example. The Department of Consumer and Business Services uses behavioral-based questions (the best indicator of future performance and behaviors is past performance and behaviors), which require a specific example as part of your answer. Then practice. Ask a friend to help you, or schedule a mock interview. Check with your WorkSource Oregon office for mock interview help.
