Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Texas Department of Public Safety in Aug 2021

Interview

I thought the interview was difficult as a recent college graduate. Because the position requires proof of so many courses and familiarity with analytical instrumentation, you’d think you would talk about your experience with those classes that prepared you for the position. Instead you’re answering questions that doesn’t have anything to do with their requirements even though if you hadn’t taken certain courses, your application would be ignored. Might as well had interviewed to be a custodian or receptionist.

Example: “I love working with customers because it gives me an opportunity to make someone’s day better. I enjoy helping people find what they’re looking for or solving their problem. However, sometimes customers are rude or impatient, which makes my job harder. I always do my best to stay positive in these situations.”

Example: “I expect that one of the biggest challenges I will face as a police officer in this department is working with people who are experiencing mental health issues. In my last position, I had to respond to several calls where individuals were having psychotic episodes or other mental health crises. I always made sure to call for backup when responding to these types of calls so that we could ensure the safety of everyone involved. After speaking with the individual, I was able to diffuse the situation by listening to them and empathizing with their concerns.”

Example: “In my previous role as a security guard at a local mall, I encountered many upset customers who were looking for assistance. One of the most effective ways that I found to diffuse these situations was by remaining calm myself and listening to what they had to say. By actively listening to their concerns, I could better understand why they were frustrated and find a solution.”

This question can help the interviewer get a better idea of how you handle stressful situations and what your thought process is when faced with one. It can also show them that you have experience handling stress in the workplace, which can be important for law enforcement officers. When answering this question, it can be helpful to think about a specific situation where you had to overcome a challenge or solve a problem while on duty.

Example: “When I was working as a police officer, I responded to a call where a woman reported her husband had been acting strangely. When I arrived at their home, I found the man in his backyard with a gun. He refused to put it down when I asked him to, so I drew my weapon and told him again to drop it. Instead of following my orders, he raised the gun and pointed it at me. I fired two shots at him, but only one hit its target. Luckily, he survived, but I learned that I should have handled the situation differently.”

Why do you want to be a teacher?

“You have to know who you are as an individual and as an educator, and you have to know what you can bring to the school,” says Calvin Brown, Senior Recruiter at Alignstaffing, an education staffing firm. This question gets to the heart of that passion and self-awareness.
