In my last position, I was tasked with inspecting parts for defects, such as scratches or dents, and I would measure them using the CMM machine. The interviewer may ask this question to see if you have experience operating a CMM. If you do, they may want to know how long you’ve been using one and what your level of expertise is. If you don’t have any experience with a CMM, you can explain that you’re willing to learn the process.

In my last role, I also had to calibrate the CMM after each job because we didn’t have an automatic calibration system in place. What is a CMM?
CMM is short for coordinate measuring machine. It is a machine used by manufacturers to accurately measure and inspect the geometrical characteristics of an object, usually a specific part or component, to ensure stringent quality requirements are met and that they conform to the intended design. A modern-day CMM machine consists of three core components, being the machine body (often made from granite) that includes an X, Y and Z axis, the measuring probe and a data collection system. The granite body’s and bridges have remained largely unchanged since the first CMM was manufactured by Ferranti in 1959. However, the probes and software continue to develop at a brisk pace.

Tomorrow I have my first interview for a CMM programmer position. This is technically my 2nd interview with the company but not specifically for this position. As someone who is brand new in the field and not the most experienced Im starting to get a little nervous. I am less then 2 months away from gradauting a program in Dimensional Inspection where I have had a crash course on everything from blue print reading to programming CMMs. Does anyone out there have any tips or insight on what I should expect? Maybe an idea of types of questions I may be asked? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
