Interviews for Top Jobs at HCA Healthcare

Financial Analyst Interview

Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at HCA Healthcare (Brentwood, TN) in Apr 2017

Interview

It started with a phone interview which was pretty basic. A couple weeks later they followed up with an on site interview. It was not a 1 on 1 but rather a group interview. It lasted maybe an hour and was not difficult.

Interview Questions

  • They were interested in team fit and specifically asked if I was an extrovert or introvert. In retrospect it is a little surprising as the job function has minimal communication outside of the team and absolutely no networking or presenting involved.

Do you currently hold any industry licenses or certifications? If so, why did you pursue them?

An interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your qualifications for this position. If you do have certifications or licensure, this is a perfect chance to talk about how they helped improve your skills.

Example: “I currently hold a Chartered Financial Analyst certification from the Corporate Finance Institute, which I pursued in order to gain more experience in topics like financial reporting and investment analysis. By getting my CFA, I learned more about different tools and applications that financial analysts are beginning to use more frequently.”

This is another question that interviewers use to gauge your knowledge of industry terminology. When you give your answer, specify a model and explain your reasoning for choosing it.

Why do you want to be a financial analyst?

Employers want to know why the job scope of a financial analyst is appealing to you. If they invest in you, they want to know what parts of the role really get you out of bed in the morning. There’s no right answer to this question. Just be honest and detailed. “I love working with numbers” is too generic, but you could try something like this:

“I love working with numbers to understand the financial implications of a decision. Knowing the implications will help me guide business managers toward educated and responsible business decisions.”

Typical interview process for a financial analyst

The typical interview process consists in screening, behavioral, and technical (practical exercises) questions, and optionally also from a personality test.

You can deal with all these challenges in a single, super-long interview session, or they may split it to a few rounds of interviews (phone interview, online interview, second interview, etc). But it is just a question of a form. You will always deal with the questions, and sometimes also with the tests. The key to success is simple–preparing for everything they may throw at you… Let’s have a look at the questions.

After the initial screening, you need to find out whether a candidate possesses the right hard and soft skills to do the job successfully. It is a good idea to start an interview with the absolute basics: the level of their professional knowledge, how they use this knowledge to attain different objectives and how they keep up with news and current developments. Technical questions can serve this purpose. If your company uses any specific methods or tools, you might also want to ask them about those. Other skills needed such as orientation to detail, analytical ability and reliability can be assessed through both situational and behavioral questions. If you expect the role to involve high interaction with others (e.g. investors or colleagues), you can ask about their communication and presentation abilities as well.

This Financial Analyst interview profile brings together a snapshot of what to look for in candidates with a balanced sample of suitable interview questions.

The basic profile of financial analyst candidates will consist of three elements: education, experience and professional credentials. Their educational background will probably involve degrees in accounting or finance so looking for credentials such as Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) might help you reduce the initial pool of candidates. Usually, at least a couple years of experience are required for non-junior roles. According to the requirements of your position, you can look for less or more experience in the particular role or industry.
