2 McKinsey interview timeline ↑

When you’re getting ready for your McKinsey case interview, it can be hard to know when each part of the process will happen. To help illustrate a typical timeline, weve created the below overview of McKinseys recruitment schedule. As a rule of thumb you can expect the whole process to take 5 to 8 weeks.

Please note: this is meant to give you a general overview, and may not reflect your specific interview timeline. Actual interview timelines depend on a number of factors (e.g. Experience hire vs. University hire). The below is based on the expected recruitment timelines at the University of Chicago (an MBB target school). You can find the original document from the University of Chicago here.

You now know what to expect from the hiring process and when it will happen. Next, let’s talk about the skills that McKinsey will test you on during case interviews.

Case structure and examples ↑

During your McKinsey interviews, you will be presented with a case study about a company facing an issue. For example, your case could be about an industrial facility that is having trouble making money or a business that needs help making a strategic choice about a new product. Cases are usually a simplified version of real projects your interviewer worked on in the past.

He or she will tell you about the problem the company is having and then ask you questions about it. She may also provide you with documents such as graphs and tables with figures about the company. You will be allowed to use scrap paper to structure your thoughts and perform calculations. However, you will not be allowed to use a calculator.

Most McKinsey case interviews use the following structure:

  • Situation
  • Framework question
  • Quantitative question
  • Creativity question
  • Recommendation

First, your interviewer will introduce you to the company’s situation and business problem. The interviewer will then ask you to name the things you would do to solve the problem. This is called a “framework question.” Then you will be asked to answer one or more quantitative questions. Finally, you will be asked to write down your first thoughts.

In addition, at some point during your interview, you will be asked a creativity question. These are usually broad questions like “what else should the business look into to boost its online sales?”

Before the end of the case, your interviewer will ask you to give the company a general recommendation based on the research you just did.

You should be ready for these kinds of questions because they will almost certainly be asked during your McKinsey interviews, even though the format and order of the questions may change from one case to the next. An additional exercise we would recommend doing is to take a look at the different case interviews available on McKinseys website. As you go through each case, you should try to map each question to the 5 types of questions we have listed above.
