Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties. Mellow Mushroom Cook: I worked in the kitchen and made pizza, salads, and hoagies. Whatever they needed to be made I made it when a ticket came up. At first, I worked with pizza and ovens. Once I was good at those, I moved on to salad. Then I made hoagies, and now whenever I’m in the kitchen, I make whatever needs to be made. If we need somebody on any one of the stations I can do it. Additionally, at the end of the night it’s a lot of cleaning. Because of health codes, we need to put all the ingredients in a new container and clean every surface and drawer. All the floors in the back. That’s all kitchen staff duty. Then there are times when you’ll be asked to do dish, which just means washing dishes all night. You have to clean out the dish room and clean that out before the end of the night. That’s pretty much it.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like? Mellow Mushroom Cook: You’re always doing something. The saying is, “If you have time to lean, you have time to clean”. If you’re standing around doing nothing someone is going to tell you to do something. From the beginning to the end, you have to pretty much keep going nonstop. If you stop for water, smoke, or something else, you can only do it for a certain amount of time. Generally you’re trying to get back as soon as you can.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process? Mellow Mushroom Cook: The Mellow Mushroom application has a lot of jokes on it. I think their goal is to try and make it seem like they’re more laid back and friendly. On the app, there are a lot of things like “Tell us your favorite joke” and “draw a comic.” The application was looked over by the general manager when I turned it in, and the back of the house manager interviewed me when I finally got one. There is a general manager, a front of the house manager, and a back of the house manager. The back of the house manager told me that he wanted to go over my application with me one-on-one because he wanted to get to know me better. It became very clear that he actually didn’t read the application at all. That was all he was doing to avoid having to do the work ahead of time. He did it right there while I was sitting there.

Interviewer: What questions did the hiring manager ask you during the interview? Mellow Mushroom Cook: “Can you handle a fast-paced environment? How do you deal with stress? Have you worked in a kitchen before?” That’s usually the first question because I hadn’t worked in a kitchen before and he was hesitant to hire me because it’s hard work. I don’t think people understand who hard it is until you get there and actually do it. Every day is pretty much the same, and you have to do a lot of work for a minimum wage job.

Asker: How did you find out you got the job? Mellow Mushroom Cook: During the back-of-the-house interview, he told me right then that I got the job. He scheduled me for the next week and then I started, but it was slow. Back there is a lot to learn, so I began with ovens. However, they don’t need an oven guy every day. They need an oven guy maybe Friday and Saturday. I slowly learned how to make pizzas and other things. At first, I only worked for about 10 hours, but as time went on, I added more and more hours. I had about 30 hours before I started school again. That’s kind of how it went all summer.

Interviewer: What other tips would you give someone looking for work? Mellow Mushroom Cook: If you’re looking for a server job, they want people who are easygoing. If you’re looking for the kitchen, they’re looking for hard workers. If you’re a hard worker and you can demonstrate that to them. They will like it if you talk about a tough and stressful time at work or school that you were able to keep your cool about.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties. Staff Member at Mellow Mushroom: As a host, I came in every day and did what the manager told me to do. To-go boxes should be stacked, tables should be wiped down, counters should be cleaned, and the table should be bussed if it hasn’t been bussed yet. I was just a host. When there was an empty table, I sat people down, refilled their drinks, and let them know where their table was.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like? Mellow Mushroom Host: It was really laidback. We were allowed to wear jeans and a t-shirt. So we had to remember that people weren’t coming here for a stuffy, fancy restaurant. They were coming here to have fun, unwind, and eat dinner with their families. The waiters were all nice. They obviously want their tables. So it was this kind of “don’t mess up” thing. It was great except for Friday and Saturday nights, when it would get really crowded or tense. They showed me what to do. I had no problems. It was a great time working there.

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee. Host: When you come in, you do the basic things I said, like fold boxes and clear the table. As soon as all the boxes were folded and nothing else needed to be done, I went to work at the register and took orders for takeout. I also did random tasks like pick up and drop off food, clean the bathroom (which I did every night before the store closed), empty the trash, and other small, everyday tasks. If someone needed help serving food, you served that person food. If someone needed to pay for something… you basically facilitated employees that are overwhelmed. It was an aide kind of job. I did odds and ends with everything.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process? Mellow Mushroom Host: I knew the manager. I wanted a job for the summer, and I knew the manager. He said you need to fill out an online application. I found the job opening online and filled out the application. He then told me that he didn’t need to meet with me in person because he knew me well enough. But I guess if he didn’t know the person well enough, he would have required an interview. But he was like: “Show up. I know you’re respectful, you’ll be on time, you’ll do your job, have a good work ethic. “Just go to work in jeans and the Mellow Mushroom t-shirt they gave me.”

People who are interviewing for a job asked what kinds of questions? Mellow Mushroom Host: They wanted to see how friendly you were because the job requires a lot of social skills. They wanted to make sure you could talk to customers, you could handle a to-go order. It’s hard to feel overwhelmed or stressed because every restaurant is pretty full on Friday and Saturday nights. They wanted you to be able to stay calm, say “Okay, you’re next,” clear the table, do other things, and just talk to people. Don’t be socially awkward. Just try to relax, because it’s a relaxing environment. If you’re on edge, then the customers become on edge. So, make sure you know how to behave and be polite around other people.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates? Mellow Mushroom Host: I feel like I have good personality. I’m very good at speaking to other people, like strangers. I am truly interested in how are you feeling. It’s not like a facade; it’s not a fake personality. I am truly interested. There was no awkward tension with the boss. There are times when I work at other places and the boss is just that—your boss. You can’t always be afraid of him. You need to be able to talk to him and ask, “What do you want done? What do you need me to do?” I think my personality and the fact that other people said, “Brett’s a good guy,” really helped me build a good reputation. So, just good character and stuff.

Interviewer: What else would you tell someone looking for work? Mellow Mushroom Host: You’ll experience a lot of different things and a lot of stress. If you’ve never worked in the food business, you can’t really understand what it’s like. So until you realize it, you might not believe you’re doing anything wrong, but a customer could be upset with you or think you were rude. And you don’t think he might’ve had that. Remember that you can’t please everyone. Just know that you’re doing your best, and know that you will have both stressful and fun times. Not every night is going to be a piece of cake with nothing to do. You are going to rush times, and you’re going to experience different groups of people. Not everyone is nice, and some people are dirty sometimes, so you’ll have to deal with a range of people.
