First prioritize the important activities that impact the business most. Then discuss the issue of having too many initiatives with the boss so that it can be offloaded. Work harder to get the initiatives done.

For example, I enjoyed rock climbing because it taught me the value of practicing hard at a sport to become skilled in it. I bring this same diligence to my work approach today as well.

Make sure you do your research on their competitors. You can find this by going to yahoo finance and click on their competitors (if they are public). From there research the news on them and go to their websites to understand their positioning on solutions and vision. You can also research local regional companies that are their competition (if its a smaller private company on a regional scale) by simply typing in similar product offerings in the Google search followed by the city. Make sure you know their competitors vision, products, culture, and how they are differentiated against their competition (and if theyre not, how they could be)

Think of which personalities you work best with (do you like outgoing, collaborative, personable working relationships and so forth?)

This is a classic brainteaser, which was reportedly first asked by a Microsoft interviewer. Heres how to “”solve”” this brainteaser (remember to speak and reason out loud while solving this brainteaser): Why are manhole covers round? Could there be a structural reason? Why arent manhole covers square? It would make it harder to fit with a cover. Youd have to rotate it exactly the right way. The pipes below are also round, so fitting them might be easier, as might be making them. So many manhole covers are round because they dont need to be rotated. There are no corners to deal with. Also, a round manhole cover wont fall into a hole because it was rotated the wrong way, so its safer. Looking at this, it seems corners are a problem. You cant cut yourself on a round manhole cover. And because its round, it can be more easily transported. One person can roll it.

Usually, if the answer to a brainteaser seems too easy, chances are the answers wrong. And in this case, the answer is not zero degrees. The hour hand, remember, moves as well. That is, in addition to the minute hand. And so, at 3:15, the hour hand and the minute hand are not on top of each other. In fact, the hour hand has moved a quarter of the way between the 3 and 4. This means its moved a quarter of 30 degrees (360 degrees divided by 12 equals 30). So the answer, to be exact, is seven and a half degrees (30 divided by four).

Companies want staff that can ramp quickly, but also want people who are realistic. So take into consideration how intense the job is and then give a good answer. For example, if youre applying to marketing, collaboration could mean discussing new ways of social media advertising to reach an audience of over a million people to strengthen the brand awareness of the company.

Think of your skill sets with regards to: analytical skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills, computer skills, presentation skills, management skills, sales skills and so forth.

Seemingly random personality-test type questions like these come up in interviews generally because hiring managers want to see how you can think on your feet. Theres no wrong answer here, but youll immediately gain bonus points if your answer helps you share your strengths or personality or connect with the hiring manager. Pro tip: Come up with a stalling tactic to buy yourself some thinking time, such as saying, “Now, that is a great question. I think I would have to say… ”

Interviewers ask personal questions in an interview to “see if candidates will fit in with the culture [and] give them the opportunity to open up and display their personality, too,”. In other words, if someone asks about your hobbies outside of work, its totally OK to open up and share what really makes you tick. Hiring managers want to know that you not only have some background on the company, but that youre able to think critically about it and come to the table with new ideas. So, come with new ideas! What new features would you love to see? How could the company increase conversions? How could customer service be improved? A multi tiered process as is the case with most of these larger organisations these days. I did this just before the start of the pandemic and even then it was all done remotely online. The different stages went through a lot of multiple choice responses which are used to figure out personality, strengths, weaknesses and suitability for the role. From memory this was fairly short and then I believe I had 1 more additional online assessment before then having a face to face interview over zoom with the local branch manager and also area manager simultaneously. It’s been a while, but my recollection is was that there was a little small talk and then it was straight to the calling on examples of experiences where you’d overcome challenges, succeeded, failed, struggled to communicate with someone etc etc and what you learned from that scenario. Essentially – you either recall an example or make one up that best demonstrates the skills, experience and work ethic that’s most ideal for the role and their community culture.

  • I’ve mentioned these above. Pretty standard stuff – a lot of ‘can you remember a time when…’ stuff. There were a couple of slightly trickier ones in there from memory – ones where you want to demonstrate your ability to concede a failure and learn but still not show a specific weakness. I think I resisted the classic temptation to say I worked too much and went with something about perfectionism and at times perhaps focussing on smaller details rather than the big picture (knowing fine well that for this particular role, that’s actually a positive).
