Anonymous Interview Candidate in Vaughan, ON

I interviewed at TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) (Vaughan, ON)

Feb 15 – applied Feb 21 – job posting closed Mar 11 – got a call for interview Mar 18 – had a virtual interview Generally interviews are a conversation, but this was extremely structured, very stale and dry. Just straight questions and answers, not a single comment on my answers. It took 1:15 hrs to ask about 20 questions and the whole time their heads were down, writing something. I wasn’t sure if they were even listening. I felt that they didn’t care about my answers as if they already had someone else for the position and my interview was just a formality to meet some kind of requirement. I was told that I would hear back in about 2-3 weeks. April 4 – I was advised that I didn’t get the job

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Toronto, ON

I applied online. I interviewed at TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) (Toronto, ON) in Feb. 2022

The interview process went pleasantly well. I applied for this position in January 2022 online. The TTC requires you to create an account, upload a separate resume and cover letter, and fill in all of your career information in your “career profile”. I did so and got a confirmation email. I received a phone call from a TTC Human Resources Consultant a few weeks late in February 2022. Requested an interview. They sent in an email with Microsoft Teams information, and some interview notes. The interview lasted 1 hour. About 15 questions. I thought it would be accounting, financial and treasury related. It was all SUPERVISORY (so leadership skills, people management, scheduling, and assessing abilities). The interview ended, I asked some questions about the role (why is it open, work location, etc). I was offered the role but declined because I received a better offer from another municipal government.

  • What supervisory and/or management skills do you have and please explain how this relates to treasury and banking and what challenges you encountered. Answer Question

Ok so this is a pet peeve lunch time project for me. For the next few days Ill add information here to help people who want to get hired as an operator for TTC. Think of it as my giving back to the community at large.

At the session you will write an aptitude test, 50 questions multiple choice plus you have to answer an essay question at the end about why you want to work for TTC. The multiple choice test is the Wonderlic test where they test your aptitude and how well you can respond to questions within a certain time period. You have 12 minutes to complete as many questions as possible. You CANNOT answer all 50 questions accurately in 12 minutes. The test is designed that way. So what I suggest is aim for accuracy. Even if you only answer 20 questions strive to answer accurately and time yourself accordingly. Dont get stuck on one answer. If it takes longer than 15 seconds to answer, guess the answer (because at least you get 25% chance of getting it right instead of 0% by skipping it) and move on to the next one.

So the interview is structured like this: the first set of questions will be about the shadowing assignment you completed. They pretty much ask you to repeat verbally what you wrote down in the assignment. Expect questions like:

“Tell us about some of operator duties you observed…” and you may even be asked “Why are you the right candidate for the TTC?” (just tell them you enjoy serving the public, always eager to take on a challenge, youre looking to build a long-term career, etc.) Remember, if you get hired it costs more than $10,000 to train a new operator, so they are investing more than 10 gs to bring you on board. So think like them and give them the answer that youd want to hear if you were in their position. Be positive and engaging but dont be fake positive or demonstrate some over-eagerness to get hired. Sell yourself but also be exclusive. If you made it to the interview stage you obviously have something they see as valuable in you. That was my approach. People who show desperation to get hired are usually never hired.

After the test, depending if they decide to move ahead with you, you will get an email invite for an interview. The face to face interview is conducted by 2 members of the HR department. Interviews take place at 250 Bloor St. East, 11th floor. The whole floor is leased by TTC and highly protected. You need the secretary at the front desk to buzz you in.

    What Is the Aptitude Test?

This test is used by employers to estimate applicant’s cognitive abilities related to work. It helps them understand whether you will perform your role well and will be a good fit for the company. There are several types of the Aptitude Test. The most popular among them are the Abstract Reasoning Test, the Verbal Reasoning Test, and Numerical Reasoning Test. Your answers on the test will inform your employers whether you possess good problem-solving skills, whether you learn new material quickly, and if you can process new information well and quickly. Analyzing your test, they will also know if you can think strategically and draw valid conclusions from ambiguous information. Aptitude tests are usually strictly timed. You will have 12 minutes to answer 50 questions posed on the test. To finish the test on time is challenging. Do not hurt your chances of answering all questions within a short time limit by taking the test for the first time on your actual examination. Practice at home with our resources and let TTC’s recruiters shortlist you for the interview.
