In May 2017, Special Counsel Robert Mueller was appointed to investigate Russian interference in the election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia The Mueller investigation lasted for two years and resulted in the indictment of several Trump associates, including former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort
However the Mueller investigation did not find sufficient evidence to establish that the Trump campaign had conspired or coordinated with Russia to interfere in the election. The report also did not reach a conclusion on whether Trump obstructed justice.
The Impact of the Allegations
The “phony Russian witch hunt” had a significant impact on American politics. It led to a deep partisan divide with Republicans largely defending Trump and Democrats largely criticizing him.
The allegations also had a negative impact on Trump’s presidency. He frequently complained about the investigation, calling it a “hoax” and a “witch hunt.” The investigation also distracted Trump from other priorities, such as passing legislation and addressing foreign policy challenges.
